The Government of Pakistan has written a letter to U.S. President Joe Biden seeking clemency for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui.
Islamabad High Court Justice Sardar Ijaz Ishaq Khan heard the case regarding Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s release from a U.S. prison and her return to the homeland, with Additional Attorney General Manzoor Iqbal presenting in court.
The Additional Attorney General informed the court that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had written a letter to the U.S. President regarding the pardon of Aafia Siddiqui.
The Prime Minister stated in the letter that he has always found the U.S. to be a friend of Pakistan and its people, recalling the role of the President in the approval of the Kerry-Lugar Bill 15 years ago.
The letter highlighted the important matter of Aafia Siddiqui, who has been in a U.S. prison since 2010, sentenced to 86 years in prison by the U.S. District Court, of which she has already served 16 years.
Shehbaz Sharif wrote that, as Prime Minister, it is his responsibility to intervene in the matter and urged the President to grant a pardon for Aafia Siddiqui on humanitarian grounds, stating that Aafia Siddiqui’s family and millions of Pakistanis are awaiting his kindness.
