The bill to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court from 17 to 23 will be presented in the National Assembly on Friday.

According to Dawn News, parliamentary sources say that the bill to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court will be presented in the National Assembly on Friday.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan will consist of 23 judges including the Chief Justice.

According to the sources, Barrister Daniyal Chaudhry had already presented the bill on the day of the private proceedings, the National Assembly session was extended till Friday for the approval of the bill, according to the revised schedule, the assembly session was to end today.

It is important to note that due to the backlog of cases in the Supreme Court and the resulting delay in providing justice to the public, the government appointed two ad-hoc judges in July of this year. However, critics labeled the government’s action as an attempt to alter the balance of power within the Supreme Court.

President Asif Ali Zardari approved the appointment of two ad hoc judges in the Supreme Court of Pakistan on July 26.

In a statement issued by the President’s House, it was said that the President has approved the appointment of Justice Sardar Tariq Masood and Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Mian Khel as ad hoc judges of the Supreme Court for one year.

Justice Sardar Tariq Masood and Justice Mazhar Alam are former judges of the Supreme Court. The President approved the appointment of ad hoc judges under Article 182 of the Constitution.

Earlier in July, the Supreme Judicial Council approved the appointment of Justice Sardar Tariq Masood and Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Mian Khel as ad hoc judges.

The Chief Justice had recommended the names of 4 retired judges for the appointment of ad hoc judges, including the names of Justice Retired Mushir Alam, Justice Retired Maqbool Baqir, Justice Retired Mazhar Alam Mian Khel and Justice Retired Tariq Masood.

However, retired Justice Muneer Alam and retired Justice Maqbool Baqar have declined the offer to become ad-hoc judges. Justice Maqbool Baqar refused the responsibility due to personal commitments, while Justice Muneer Alam apologized for the offer in light of the ongoing campaign against ad-hoc judges on social media.
