The National Assembly of Pakistan consists of 314 members, all of whom receive a monthly salary.
According to media reports, among these 314 members, only one has been revealed to be not taking a salary. While 313 members, including Nawaz Sharif, receive their monthly payments, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) MNA Asifa Bhutto has chosen not to accept her salary.
It is worth noting that the National Assembly recently passed a bill with a majority vote to increase the salaries and allowances of its members. During the session, the opposition party PTI strongly criticized the decision and demanded that the bill be withdrawn.
Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, in response to the opposition’s objections, ruled that the salary increase is not mandatory. He stated that any member who does not wish to accept the increased salary can submit a written request, and they will continue receiving their previous salary.
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar also addressed the assembly, emphasizing that no salary increase should be imposed on anyone against their will. He reiterated that members unwilling to take the additional salary could opt out through a written request.
