Pakistani experts have achieved a major milestone in the poultry farming sector by introducing a new chicken breed suitable for rural areas, capable of laying over 200 eggs annually.
Developed by scientists at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, the breed has been named “Uni-Gold.” It requires less feed and can withstand extreme weather, particularly heat.
The breed’s standout feature is that it lays three times more eggs than traditional desi hens while requiring comparatively less feed, making it an ideal choice for small-scale farmers.
Experts believe that the Uni-Gold breed could be a game-changer for the rural poultry industry, as it can meet both egg and meat production needs.
Scientists noted that this achievement comes after six decades and marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s agricultural research.
The university administration has also devised a plan to distribute this breed across the country to boost local desi poultry production and strengthen the rural economy.
This chicken is not only environmentally adaptable but also offers a source of livelihood for rural women due to its easy and low-cost maintenance.
