The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a reduction of Rs1.50 per unit in the average base electricity tariff to provide relief to consumers.
According to available details, NEPRA has proposed a base tariff of Rs 34 per unit for the upcoming fiscal year, which is lower than the current year’s rate of Rs 35.50 per unit. However, this reduction depends on the subsidy provided by the government, which will be decided before final approval.
NEPRA has also approved revenue targets of Rs3,520 billion, considering the financial needs of electricity distribution companies. Officials stated that this measure aims to reduce the financial burden on the public affected by inflation.
Meanwhile, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted an application to NEPRA seeking approval for an increase of 10 paisa per unit in the electricity tariff. A hearing on this request is scheduled for June 30, after which a final decision is expected.
This development indicates that the government and NEPRA are taking steps to provide relief to the public and maintain financial stability in the energy sector.
