Paris: A proposal has been put forward in France to completely ban children under the age of 15 from using social media platforms. According to foreign media, a French parliamentary commission released its report after a six-month review of the psychological effects of TikTok and other platforms on children and teenagers.
The report recommends a full ban on social media for those under 15, while introducing a “digital curfew” for youth aged 15 to 18, restricting access between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. to discourage late-night usage.
The commission further suggested launching public awareness campaigns on the harmful effects of social media, implementing mandatory age verification at the time of account creation, and strengthening parental monitoring.
These recommendations come after seven French families filed a lawsuit against TikTok in 2024, claiming their children were exposed to content that allegedly drove them to attempt suicide.
TikTok, in response, stated that last year it removed 98 percent of inappropriate content in France using artificial intelligence (AI).
