Kathmandu: Following weeks of anti-corruption protests that toppled the government, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki is expected to be appointed as Nepal’s interim prime minister.
According to Reuters, this development comes after Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned under mounting pressure, marking one of the country’s most significant political crises in recent years.
The protests erupted after the government imposed a social media ban, which was later revoked. During the unrest, 34 people were killed and more than 1,300 were injured, as police resorted to harsh measures to control crowds. Facing intense public pressure and growing unrest, Oli had no choice but to step down.
A constitutional expert involved in consultations with President Ram Chandra Paudel and Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel confirmed that Karki is being considered for the interim role. The move, he added, is largely driven by demands from the younger Generation Z demonstrators.
Sources said a formal announcement regarding Karki’s appointment is expected later today following a meeting at the president’s residence. However, both the presidential office and the army spokesperson have so far declined to comment.
Meanwhile, life in Kathmandu is gradually returning to normal. Shops have begun reopening, traffic is resuming on major roads, though some routes remain closed, and military patrols, while reduced, continue in parts of the city.
