Karachi’s newly launched automated e-ticketing system for traffic violations has produced significant results within just three days, issuing a total of 12,942 challans worth more than Rs 65 million.
According to the traffic police, the highest number of fines—7,083—were issued for not wearing seat belts. This was followed by 2,456 fines for riding motorcycles without helmets, 1,920 for overspeeding, and 829 for running red lights.
The report further stated that 410 fines were imposed for using mobile phones while driving and 78 for driving in the wrong lane. Additionally, 49 motorists were fined for lane violations, 35 for tinted windows, 26 for overloading, and 20 each for illegal parking and stop-line breaches.
Interestingly, only 11 tickets were issued for driving the wrong way on a one-way road, while just 7 were issued for allowing passengers to ride on bus roofs. However, no fines have yet been imposed for fancy number plates, unpaid vehicle taxes, or violations of the designated bus lane.
Police officials stated that the faceless e-ticketing system aims to ensure transparency in penal actions and eliminate bribery and personal interference. The system automatically captures traffic violations through cameras and smart software, after which the challan is delivered either to the vehicle owner’s residence or via an online portal.
