Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has departed for an official visit to Azerbaijan, where he will attend events marking the fifth anniversary of Azerbaijan’s Victory Day. The visit is taking place on the invitation of President Ilham Aliyev, and important meetings between the two leaders are expected during the trip. According to the Foreign Office, the Prime Minister will participate in the official Victory Day ceremony in Baku.
Before leaving the country, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued key instructions to Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Government sources revealed that Ishaq Dar has been tasked not only with overseeing domestic affairs but also with maintaining close coordination with the leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party to ensure progress on the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment.
Sources added that the government will wait for PPP’s response following the conclusion of its Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting. If the party agrees to the proposed amendment, the cabinet is expected to approve the draft, after which it will be presented in the Senate.
According to officials, Ishaq Dar may also be authorized to preside over cabinet meetings, as the Rules of Business 1973 allow the Prime Minister to delegate this authority to any cabinet member. Additionally, the Prime Minister may also chair cabinet meetings online if deemed necessary.
Sources further noted that the amendment draft may also be approved through cabinet circulation on the Prime Minister’s instructions, while the government awaits PPP’s final stance. Meanwhile, the Senate session has been scheduled for Saturday to prepare for the possible presentation of the amendment. If PPP extends support, cabinet approval through circulation will be completed before the Senate submission.
During his visit to Azerbaijan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed Ishaq Dar to closely monitor national matters and actively participate in cabinet affairs, as the government aims for swift progress on the constitutional amendment process.
