Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has convened a crucial cabinet meeting at 10am today to finalize approval of the 27th Constitutional Amendment. According to sources, the prime minister will chair the meeting via video link from Baku, while senior cabinet members and officials are expected to participate.
Sources indicate that the government has accepted key proposals put forward by the Pakistan Peoples Party regarding constitutional amendments, and the cabinet is likely to approve the draft of the 27th Amendment during today’s session.
Meanwhile, the opposition has already rejected the amendment bill. In a joint statement issued after their meeting, opposition parties in the Senate said that the ruling coalition—including PML-N, PPP, and allied parties—is “bulldozing legislation” and keeping the amendment draft hidden from the opposition.
Earlier, after the PPP’s Central Executive Committee meeting, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari told the media that consensus had been reached on three points of the proposed constitutional amendment.
He stated that the PPP would support amendments to Article 243 and that the party is in favor of establishing constitutional courts. He added that other unresolved matters from the Charter of Democracy should also be addressed. Bilawal emphasized that provincial shares under the NFC Award may increase but cannot be reduced, and further discussions will continue to explore agreement on the remaining clauses of the 27th Amendment.
