Countries across Asia are facing a new wave of destruction as powerful storms, continuous rainfall, severe flooding, and landslides have caused widespread devastation. According to recent reports, millions have been affected across multiple regions, while more than 1,100 people have lost their lives within just one week, and thousands have been displaced in search of safety.
Official figures confirm that 604 people have died in Indonesia, 366 in Sri Lanka, 176 in Thailand, and 3 in Malaysia. Rescue operations are ongoing in several areas, but worsening weather conditions continue to hinder relief efforts.
In Sri Lanka, the situation deteriorated to such an extent that a nationwide state of emergency was declared. President Anura Kumara described the destruction caused by the storms, persistent rainfall, and flooding as even more severe than the catastrophic 2004 tsunami.
According to the international humanitarian organization Save the Children, thousands of children in Indonesia and Thailand have been unable to attend school due to severe flooding and landslides, resulting in significant disruption to educational activities.
