With the arrival of cold weather in Karachi, pressure on cardiac patients has begun to rise, and both public and private hospitals across the city are reporting a significant increase in heart-related cases.
Experts say that the drop in temperature has not only worsened the existing condition of heart patients, but the number of new cases is also noticeably higher than usual.
Director of the Sindh Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Dr. Javed Akbar Sial, stated that the patient load at NICVD and SICVD has increased by almost 30 to 40 percent as winter begins. According to him, respiratory infections during cold weather pose serious health risks for heart patients, as such infections directly affect cardiac function and blood circulation.
He explained that cold air causes blood vessels to constrict, resulting in additional pressure on the heart. As a consequence, cases of heart attacks, angina, and other cardiac complications typically increase during winter.
Dr. Sial added that heart patients are more vulnerable to seasonal viruses and other infections during this time, which can further deteriorate their condition.
He advised heart patients to take special precautions, including protecting themselves from cold exposure, wearing warm clothing, and being especially careful while going outdoors. Furthermore, blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol must be kept under control because these conditions tend to worsen in cold weather.
Dr. Javed Akbar Sial also emphasized that if a patient experiences symptoms such as cough, flu, fever, or chest pain, they should immediately seek medical attention, as timely examination and treatment can be lifesaving during this season.
