An Anti-Terrorism Court has delivered a key judgment in a major May 9 case, acquitting senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi of all charges while awarding strict sentences to several other high-profile party members.
According to the court’s verdict, after a detailed examination of evidence, witness testimonies, and the overall case record about the attack at Club Chowk and the GOR gate on May 9, the court concluded that the allegations against Shah Mahmood Qureshi could not be proven, leading to his acquittal. The judgment also notes that the arguments presented by both the prosecution and the defense were fully evaluated before reaching the final decision.
In the same case, the ATC found PTI leaders Dr. Yasmin Rashid, former provincial minister Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed, Senator Ejaz Chaudhry, and former governor Omer Sarfraz Cheema guilty, sentencing each of them to 10 years in prison. The court stated that the evidence produced against these individuals was sufficient to establish the charges.
Following the announcement, political and legal circles have termed the development highly significant, with experts suggesting that the ruling may influence several other ongoing May 9-related cases. Meanwhile, the convicted leaders are expected to challenge the decision in higher courts.
It is worth mentioning that multiple cases were registered nationwide after the May 9 incidents, many of which are still being heard in Anti-Terrorism Courts, with several major verdicts yet to come.
