Jamaat-e-Islami has submitted an adjournment motion in the Sindh Assembly, adopting a strong stance against the government following the Gul Plaza tragedy in Karachi.
Presenting a motion in the assembly, Jamaat-e-Islami parliamentary leader Muhammad Farooq said that this tragic incident has exposed the serious flaws of the city’s corrupt and rotten administrative system.
Muhammad Farooq expressed serious concerns over the performance of the fire brigade and said that responsibility for the loss of precious lives in the accident and the fire in Gul Plaza, which contains 1,200 wells, should be determined immediately.
He said that due to the lack of implementation of building and town planning regulations in the city, more dilapidated buildings are coming into existence, which pose a serious threat to the lives of the people.
The parliamentary leader stressed that no negligence or lapse should be tolerated in the investigation of the Gul Plaza tragedy, and strict action should be taken against those responsible.
He said that to ensure the safety of citizens’ lives and property, the government must immediately implement existing laws so that such tragic incidents can be prevented in the future.
It may be recalled that the fire that broke out in the Gul Plaza Shopping Mall on MA Jinnah Road on Saturday night has been brought under control after about 36 hours of efforts. As a result of the intense fire, two parts of the building collapsed, and so far, 20 people have died due to suffocation and burns. Rescue teams were able to enter the building after 40 hours, and a search operation was launched to find the people present there. Due to the intense darkness, officials are searching for citizens trapped in the building using flashlights.
