Lahore: On the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, strict austerity measures have been implemented across the province, including Lahore, aimed at reducing energy consumption and government expenditures.
According to the notification, shops, markets, and shopping malls across Punjab will close at 8 PM, while marriage halls and restaurants will be allowed to operate until 10 PM to ensure energy savings.
Under government orders, fuel quotas for official vehicles have been reduced by 50 percent, and a complete ban has been imposed on the purchase of new government vehicles to cut unnecessary spending.
The notification further states that official meetings will now be conducted online, while protocols and security vehicles for government officials will also be reduced. Government-hosted dinners and receptions have been banned, except for foreign delegations.
Additionally, the policy includes limiting working days to four per week to ensure efficient use of resources.
On the other hand, traders have expressed concerns over the decision, stating that business conditions are already weak and such measures could further increase difficulties. However, the Lahore Chamber of Commerce has supported the move, saying it will persuade traders to comply with government directives.
