In his speech at the event held on the occasion of Global Polio Day, the Prime Minister stated that we have gathered here to celebrate World Polio Day, reminding us that we are once again under attack from the polio virus.
He emphasized the need for awareness, stating, “Today we have come together to raise awareness that we must once again unite our efforts to combat this scourge. We have done this in the past, and we will do it again.”
He acknowledged the challenges ahead and stressed the importance of facing them with unwavering and resolute determination so that Pakistan can soon be free of polio.
Shahbaz Sharif remarked, “Today serves as a reminder that throughout our history, millions of children have fallen victim to polio, becoming a burden on their families. It reminds us that we need to consolidate our resolve once again.”
He expressed gratitude to international partners such as the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and particularly the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for their support in recent times and for collaborating with Pakistan on this program.
The Prime Minister expressed hope that this campaign would be successful in permanently eradicating polio from Pakistan’s borders, stating, “We will not allow it to set foot on our land again.”
During the address, he paid tribute to polio workers, noting that some have sacrificed their lives while performing their duties, leaving their children orphaned but etching their names in history for protecting children from the polio virus.
He highlighted the unfortunate report of 40 polio cases across all four provinces of Pakistan and pledged, “Today, we vow to handle these 40 cases effectively and will not rest until this virus is eliminated from Pakistan forever.”
Earlier, the Prime Minister officially launched the anti-polio campaign by administering polio drops to children.
