Pakistan has strongly advocated for a UN counterterrorism reform, demanding fair and transparent global frameworks that do not compromise the sovereignty of member states.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Pakistan’s permanent representative, Ambassador Munir Akram, said the current structure of counterterrorism governance lacks balance and is often politicized.

“There’s an urgent need for UN counterterrorism reform. Counterterrorism must not become a tool of coercion,” he emphasized.

Why UN Counterterrorism Reform Matters

Ambassador Akram pointed out that the present system targets certain developing countries while overlooking others. He criticized the lack of uniform definitions of terrorism, and called out biased practices in listing and delisting individuals and organizations.

He added that many mechanisms operate without sufficient oversight or procedural fairness, undermining the credibility of UN-led efforts.

International Support Grows

Several countries including Iran, Turkey, and Malaysia voiced their support for Pakistan’s stance. They agreed that reforms are essential for restoring trust in the UN’s global counterterrorism role.
