Sugar prices across the country have reached record levels, making life even more difficult for ordinary citizens. In various cities, the price of sugar per kilogram has surged from Rs185 to Rs200, while in Karachi alone, an increase of Rs8 per kilogram has been recorded within just one week.
The situation in Peshawar is not much different, where sugar is being sold in retail markets at Rs190 per kilogram. Although the wholesale price is slightly lower, the cost of a 50-kilogram sack has reached Rs9,000, creating a major financial burden for small traders and domestic consumers.
In Lahore, sugar prices have also risen sharply, with retail prices ranging between Rs190 and Rs200 per kilogram. After administrative actions aimed at controlling prices, several shopkeepers have stopped selling sugar altogether, further worsening the situation.
Sugar has also become more expensive in Quetta, where the retail price stands at Rs190 per kilogram and the wholesale price at Rs180 per kilogram. Experts warn that if the government does not take immediate action, further price hikes are likely, which could increase public frustration and anger.
