In a major development for residents of Karachi, the Sindh government has decided to introduce double-decker and modern electric EV buses in the city starting next week, marking another significant improvement in public transportation facilities. The initiative aims to reduce the increasing traffic pressure, address mobility challenges, and facilitate daily commuters in the country’s largest metropolitan city.

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh’s Senior Minister for Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon. Detailed briefings were given on various ongoing transportation projects and their progress. Among those present were Transport Secretary Asad Zaman, SMTA Managing Director Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, Trans Karachi CEO Fawad Ghaffar Soomro, and Yellow Line BRT Project Director Zameer Abbasi.

During the session, Sharjeel Memon was briefed on the construction phases, challenges, and completion pace of the Yellow Line and Red Line BRT projects. He emphasized that operationalizing the Yellow Line BRT as soon as possible remains the provincial government’s top priority, and instructions have been issued to accelerate development activities.

Officials informed the meeting that new double-decker and EV buses will arrive in Karachi next week, after which services will be launched on designated routes. The provincial minister stated that preparations are also underway to expand the Peoples Bus Service to other districts of Sindh. The government aims to introduce an EV taxi service by December and add 500 more buses to the fleet during the current financial year.

Sharjeel Memon added that the improvement of transport facilities will not be limited to major cities only. Training programs are being launched at the divisional level across Sindh to enable female students and women to learn scooter riding, empowering them to travel safely and independently. Progress is also ongoing on the second phase of the Pink Scooty Scheme.

Speaking about the Yellow Line BRT project, the minister issued clear instructions that no unnecessary delays in development work will be tolerated and that any utility-related obstacles must be removed immediately. It was further informed that work on the second section of Taj Haider Bridge will begin soon, while two-way traffic on the bridge has already been restored, providing considerable relief to commuters.
