Karachi Police Surgeon Dr. Samia Syed has stated that postmortems of 71 bodies recovered from the Gul Plaza tragedy have been completed. At the same time, the identities of 16 deceased individuals have been confirmed so far.
Speaking to Geo News, Dr. Samia Syed said that six bodies recovered from the building were in a recognizable condition. In contrast, the identities of eight bodies were established through DNA testing. She added that one body was identified through a national identity card, while another was identified based on a locket worn around the neck.
Dr. Samia Syed further explained that due to severe burning, the DNA identification process has become complex and time-consuming; however, efforts to identify the remaining victims are ongoing.
Meanwhile, Senior Fire Officer Zafar Khan told the media that a fire had reignited in the basement of the Gul Plaza building, which was successfully extinguished. He stated that a diesel tank had not been removed from the rooftop in time, and a fire broke out during attempts to remove it, which was later brought under control.
Zafar Khan added that the building’s structure has become extremely weak due to the fire. He said the search operation has now entered its final stage, but instead of intact bodies, only skeletal remains are being recovered from the debris.
