A noticeable increase in gastroenteritis cases has been recorded in Karachi during the holy month of Ramadan, raising concerns for both citizens and the healthcare system. Medical officials report a significant surge in stomach related illnesses in recent days.
According to a private television report, officials at Jinnah Hospital and Civil Hospital stated that more than 700 individuals sought medical treatment over the past seven days due to various stomach related issues. Common symptoms included vomiting, diarrhea, fever, severe abdominal pain, and acidity.
Medical experts have warned that dehydration and loss of essential salts during fasting can impair kidney function and, in severe cases, increase the risk of kidney failure. They further explained that a lack of water and electrolytes may also contribute to the spread of infections, leading to further health complications.
Experts have advised citizens to consume simple, balanced, and fresh meals at iftar and to avoid fried, fatty, and heavily spiced foods. Unhealthy dietary choices, they noted, can aggravate stomach disorders.
Health specialists also emphasized the importance of consuming fruits and vegetables in sufficient quantities, while ensuring they are thoroughly washed before use to prevent contamination.
According to experts, the current situation serves as a warning that negligence in dietary choices during iftar and suhoor could turn minor gastro issues into serious complications. This may increase the burden on hospitals and adversely affect public health. They also stressed the importance of hand hygiene and avoiding unhygienic or suspicious outside food, adding that dietary caution during Ramadan plays a vital role in maintaining overall health and strengthening the immune system.
