Karachi: Due to security concerns, several important highways have been closed to general traffic in the city, resulting in severe hardship for citizens.
According to officials, containers and barriers have been erected on all routes leading to the American Consulate to restrict movement and prevent any untoward incident.
According to the traffic police, the road from PIDC Chowk to Sultanabad via MT Khan Road is completely closed, while traffic from the same point towards CM House via Ziauddin Road has also been suspended.
Similarly, roadblocks have been put up on the routes from Tower to Mai Kalachi Road and from Bort Basin to Mai Kalachi. These measures have increased traffic pressure in the central business areas of the city.
Security agencies say that these measures have been taken as a precaution in view of possible protests and the law and order situation. Citizens have been instructed to take alternative routes, while traffic officials are present at various locations and guiding vehicles to pass according to the new routing.
On the other hand, traffic has also been closed near the FTC on Sharjah Faisal. Containers have been placed on the road leading from the FTC to the Metropole, while traffic movement in this section has been limited since yesterday.
Vehicles coming towards Sharjah-e-Faisal are being diverted towards Saddar by making a U-turn at the Gora Cemetery, causing an unusual rush on the surrounding roads.
Traffic police officials say that in case of any problem, contact the helpline. According to the administration, the roads will be opened in a phased manner as soon as the security situation returns to normal, however, safety measures are being prioritized for now.
